Let's start with two key terms: PAR and PPFD.
PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) is the part of the light spectrum plants use for photosynthesis. PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) is the amount of PAR hitting a square meter every second — the true measure of light intensity for your plants.
"Lumens are for humans. PPFD is for plants."
Don't trust your eyes. Our eyes perceive brightness in lumens — and different people have varying light sensitivity, making visual assessment unreliable for plant care. A dedicated PAR meter is strongly recommended.
Light Level Reference (PPFD)
- Bright, Direct Light: 800–1,000+ PPFD — unfiltered sunlight
- Bright, Indirect Light: 150–800 PPFD — filtered or off-angle from sun
- Medium Light: 80–150 PPFD — diffused through sheer curtains
- Low Light: 20–80 PPFD — very little light
Recommended Range for Aroids
The primary genera in this collection — Alocasia, Anthurium, Monstera, and Philodendron — thrive at PPFD values between 75 and 400. This mimics bright indirect light and drives healthy growth without stress.
For measurement, an Apogee MQ-500 PAR meter is used — available on eBay with the extendable wand. Pricey, but invaluable for dialing in your grow environment.
